Day 1: Arrive at Tarapoto

 

Leave Lima in the morning and fly to Tarapoto. Your guide will meet you at the airport and take you to the first hotel.

Overnight in Tarapoto.

Day 2: Day Trip from Tarapoto

 

Today you will leave Tarapoto on a day trip visiting the hills of Cordillera Escalera. Today you will be focusing on tanagers and hummingbirds. However, the main target for the day will be the endemic Koepcke’s Hermit, a near-threatened species as per the IUCN list. You can observe these colourful birds at a rest site en-route, where the banana feeders attract them. Here we also hope to see and photograph the Golden-headed Manakin. Return to your hotel in Tarapoto in the evening.

Day 3: Tarapoto to Waqanki

 

You will leave Tarapoto after breakfast. Head west, then stop at a narrow canyon where you can observe some bizarre-sounding oil birds roost among the rocks and caves. This terrain also puts the treetops at eye level, which sometimes allows you to see flocks of White-eyed Parakeets. After another 30-minute drive, you reach your next destination on the outskirts of Moyobamba. The lodge and its surrounding forests are home to an incredible diversity of fauna and fauna. Birds, orchids, butterflies ad amphibians can be found here. It is also a famous coffee-producing region. The are has a lot to offer, a botanical garden, a hummingbird observation area, trails, viewpoints and waterfalls. Look out for the stunning Rufous-crested Coquette and the endemic Mishana Tyrannulet.

Day 4: Full Day in Moyobamba

 

Photographers can spend the day today at the lodge’s garden waiting for the visiting birds and photographing them. In contrast, bird enthusiast might want to wander around the trails looking for new species.

Day 5: Moyobamba to Owlet Lodge

 

Today, your 2,5-hour journey will take you to your next base on this holiday. First, visit a hummingbird feeding station on the route and observe around ten species of these unique birds. Then, continue your way to your accommodation which the Association of Andean Ecosystems runs. This reserve was created to help protect the habitat of the endangered, endemic Long-whiskered Owlet, Peru’s smallest owl species. Finally, enjoy a night walk in search of this rare and other Owl species.

Day 6: The Hummingbird Gardens of Alto Mayo

 

Rise early today as you will have the opportunity to discover a nearby site visited by Cinereous & Little Tinamou and Rufius-breasted Wood-Quail. Then, return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, explore another local, private reserve that contributes to the protection of the Long-whisked Owlet. Finally, enjoy a gentle walk in the forest and look for two endemic Antpittas, the Rusty-tinged ad the Ochre-fronted Antpittas. Dinner will be in the lodge, and you will have the chance to search for Owls on a night walk.

Day 7 -8: Birding in Huembo

 

After a quick breakfast, your guide will travel to the last destination on this trip, Huembo. Huembo is an excellent place to observe hummingbirds. In addition, you will be able to see the spectacular, endemic Marvelous Spatuletail and many other species. Enjoy your lunch at the lodge, then continue birding in the surrounding.

Day 9: Huembo to Tarapoto

 

Start a day with a photography session, or depart on an adventure searching for the endemic Pale-billed Antpitta. You will be leaving the lodge at 9 am for a 5,5-hour drive back to Tarapoto to catch your flight back to Lima. The trip ends on arrival at Tarapoto Airport.

Waqaki Eco-Lodge offers basic accommodation, but excellent birding opportunities. It is located by a 100 hectare private reserve between 940 and 1620m. 360 bird-species have been registered here, 4 of them are endemic.

Owlet Lodge is located at 2500m elevation and it protects 3000 hectares and it functions as a buffer zone to the Alto Mayo Protection Forest. A 12m tall observation tower provides great views and the chance to observe the local avifauna.

The lodge offers basic room, a restaurant and also has two trails. Discover the hummingbird feeders at the garden at 2100m elevation.
