Day 1: Arrive at Puerto Maldonado

 

Arrive at Puerto Maldonado in the early hours, store your unnecessary stuff in the local office and travel to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, wander around the lodge’s gardens looking for hummingbirds and tanagers at the feeders, or discover the diverse plants, bright insects, interior forest bird species and monkeys on the trails. Dinner will be served at the lodge. There will be an option for a night walk after dark.

Day 2: Discover Tambopata

 

Enjoy an early morning walk through the rainforest in search of wildlife. Visit the canopy tower overlooking the nesting sites of Blue-and-yellow and Red-bellied Macaws. Enjoy the view of the forest and photograph these iconic birds. Another option would be to visit a nearby parrot clay lick by boat and photograph the birds from an observation hide. Return to the lodge for lunch. Visit the Tres Chimbandas Lake in the afternoon looking for giant river otters, black caimans and waterbirds. Finally, return to your accommodation and enjoy another well-deserved dinner.

Day 3: Travel up on the Tambopata River

 

You will have some time to spend in the morning in the gardens or on the trails. After breakfast, you will be cruising up the Tambopata River. During the journey, look for capybaras, water birds and river turtles. You might see a tapir or a jaguar if you are extremely lucky, although these animals usually live further up the river. Arrive at Chuncho Lodge for lunch, then explore its gardens or the nearby trails.

Day 4: Visit Chuncho Clay Lick & the Canopy Tower

 

Rise early and depart to visit Chuncho Claylick. Picnic breakfast will be enjoyed en route. The clay lick is around 2 hours away (21 km). On the way, keep a sharp eye on tapirs, jaguars and other wildlife. Enjoy the morning listening and watching hundreds of macaws, parrots ad parakeets. These loud birds gather on the surrounding trees and start descending slowly to the river banks to consume clay. Return to the lodge in the late morning for lunch. In the afternoon, visit the Canopy Tower of the lodge overlooking the top of the Amazon rainforest. Watch the sunset and the roosting birds before returning to your accommodation for dinner.

Day 5: Chuncho Clay Lick & Boat Cruise

 

You will have the opportunity to visit the clay lick once again, especially if the previous day’s activity was not too successful. Lunch will be served in the lodge. In the afternoon you can choose between two activities. Take another boat cruise along the river in search of birds and mammals, or opt for a long walk along the trails looking for monkeys, birds and other mammals. (agouti, deer, etc.)

Day 6: Departure Day

 

The breakfast will be served in the lodge. After a relaxed morning, you will cruise back to Puerto Maldonado to catch your flight in the afternoon.

The lodge is owned by a Native Community (Eso Eja natives). It is located on the banks of the Tambopata River. It has 5 private bungalows, a beautiful open restaurant area and a canopy tower overlooking the aguajal palm swamp.

Chuncho Lodge (Classic)

The lodge is owned by a local person. It is also located on the banks of the Tambopata River. It has extensive trail systems and a canopy tower. It is an excellent place to enjoy the Amazon and to visit the nearby clay lick.
