THE ROAD TO MANU - PERUVIAN CLOUD FOREST & AMAZON EXPEDITION
Day 1: Arrive at Cusco
Arrive at Cusco (3,400m); your driver will take you to your hotel in the town centre. Free time for leisure before your expedition starts tomorrow.
Overnight in Cusco.

Day 2: The Huacarpay Wetlands
You will meet your guide in the morning and start your adventure by visiting the Huacarpay wetlands. The wetlands are around an hour drive away from Cusco and are home to waterbirds, hummingbirds, raptors and other high altitude species. You will then continue your way to Wayqecha Lodge, which will take another 2,5-hour drive. You will have the chance to stop along the way at spots good for bird watching.

Day 3: The Andean Cloud Forest
Spend a day around the lodge looking for the local avifauna. Explore the gardens and the trails. The day will be flexible and will focus on finding different target species.

Day 4: Travel to the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge
After breakfast, you will travel down the eastern slopes of the Andes and descend to 2,600m. There will be birding stops on the way to the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge. There will be bird and hummingbird feeders in the garden that attract colourful birds from the canopy. Visit the Cock-of-the-Rock lek in the afternoon and observe this majestic bird in its natural habitat.

Day 5: Birding around the Lodge
Visit the lek of the Cock-of-the-Rock in the morning. There is always a better chance to see some activity in the morning. In the afternoon, visit the trails nearby or explore the road up and down from the lodge.

Day 6: Explore the Upper Lowland Rainforest
Take advantage of the last opportunity to photograph the hummingbirds around the lodge before continuing to the next destination to the Andes’ lower slopes (800m). At Villa Carmen Biological Station, the forest will change to upper lowland rainforest. The biological station had extensive trails, hummingbird feeders and other bird feeders. There is also a photography hide for photographers nearby where you can observe the Amazonian Antpitta.

Day 7: Full Day Birding in the Upper Lowland Rainforest
Enjoy a full day of exploring the gardens, trails, and feeders around Villa Carmen.

Day 8: Travel to Manu National Park
After travelling through the Andes, finally, you will arrive in the Peruvian Amazon. Leave Villa Carmen in the morning, embark on a motorised longboat at Atalaya. The boat will take you down the Alto Made de Dios River. After 100 km, the river merges with the Manu River to continue for another 80 km. Finally, the journey will take you deep into the Amazon Rainforest. Arrive at the lunch for a late lunch. Discover some of the trails in search of birds, terrestrial mammals. There are 13 species of monkeys in Many, and there is an excellent chance to see most of them.

Day 9: Visit Blanquillo Clay Lick
Visit Blanquillo clay lick at dawn. Observe the macaws and other colourful birds from floating blind. If you are incredibly fortunate, you might see an ocelot or a jaguar attempting to predate the birds. Enjoy your picnic breakfast on the way, or return to the lodge for breakfast. Enjoy some birding in the garden before lunch. In the afternoon you will have the chance to visit Cocha Blanco Lake. The lake provides a home to Black Caimans, Giant River Otters, ad many waterbirds. You can see Horned Screamers, Grebes, Hoatzins, Sunbitterns, and 5 Kingfisher species with some luck. Return to the Lodge for dinner. An optional night walk or visiting a tapir clay lick can also be arranged at night.

Day 10: Discover the Peruvian Amazon
Start today with another visit to the Blanquillo clay lick, then return to the lodge for breakfast. In the afternoon, visit the nearby canopy platform looking for birds, monkeys and enjoy the view of the Amazon rainforest. Dinner will be served at the accommodation. A night walk can be arranged looking for nightjars, snakes, frogs etc..

Day 11: Travel to Puerto Maldonado
Get up early, enjoy your breakfast and depart on a long journey downstream the Made de Dios River. On arrival at a port, you will continue your trip on the land until you reach Puerto Maldonado.

***Another option would be to return to Cusco on land.
Day 12: Departure Day
Enjoy your morning in Puerto Maldonado. Your holiday will end at the airport, or you will have the chance to explore Tambopata with us.

The lodge is a Biological Research Station. It is located in the moist Andean Cloud Forest at 3000m above sea level. Enjoy the beautiful views, explore the trails and the canopy walkway while discovering its rich avifauna.

Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge (Classic)
A simple lodge that is located on the Easter slopes of the Andes, at around 1600 above the sea level. The lodge is located at a private reserve. They offer delicious home cooked food and excellent opportunities to discover the local flora and fauna.

Villa Carmen (Classic)
Villa Carmen is another Biological Station where the guests can explore the beauty of the Eastern slopes of the Andes, close to Manu National Park. The lodge has 22km of trails that provide excellent chances to see birds, mammals and to explore the lush forest.

Manu Wildlife Centre (Classic)
The Manu Wildlife Centre is an excellent place to discover the Peruvian Amazon. It is nestled just outside Manu Biosphere Reserve. The lodge has 22 bungalows with double/twin beds. It also have two canopy towers and the lodge provides great naturalist guides. Explore the clay licks, oxbow lakes and the jungle while staying here.
